Topics

Is there a way to increase the number of topics available for a space? 20 per space is very limiting if you deal with many different topics.

Gabri Sala

Ehi, you should be able to change it in the topics settings. There's the limit for post tags and space tags

J V

Gabri Sala You are confusing topics and tags. They serve different purposes.

Fabio Pinna

J VΒ as far as I know, there is not a tag function in FC, but only topics. Am I missing some feature?

J V

Fabio PinnaΒ Oh yes you are. :) Check out the combination with FluentCRM.

Fabio Pinna

J VΒ Yes I know that, but indeed, it's a FluentCRM feature, not FluentCommunity. We are talking about different things.

J V

Max is still 20 and personally I think it is enough. I would consider dividing into different spaces to keep thing more organized.

Fabio Pinna

J VΒ well if you write about travel and each country is a topic, since there are more than 190 countries in the world, 20 topics are clearly not enough, nor you can create a space for each country/region, since this would be confusing for users

J V

Fabio PinnaΒ _You would seriously want to have 190 topics? Why not make spaces for regions like US-West, US-Central and US-East, then use the topics to sort the states. Something like that is way easier to manage. Also more oversight for users. I would go crazy in you 190 topic space. πŸ˜…

Fabio Pinna

J VΒ The fact is that we use that space as a "blog", we post articles and only us che write in that space. Users can only like or comment, so they don't see this process and don't have to select between 190 topics. Doing this, we can make an index of topics in a separated page where we put the link for each topic. This is not achievable with that limit.

J V

Fabio PinnaΒ I am not sure I understand how you think topics work. You create topics for users to sort posts quickly. Even if they don't post, if you add a topic to a space, it shows on top of that space. What else could be the point of it? Maybe my brain needs a coffee?

Fabio Pinna

J VΒ I know perfectly how topics work. We can let user select a topic, or not even if the space has topics in it. But when you set a topic, then a URL is generated and you potentially can index it in a different page so that from the main website, you can create links that connect straight to that specific topic/destination in the space.

So, if I set for example a topic called "China", and I put the link to that topic in another page, then if a user clicks, he goes to that specific topic, already filtered from the others.

I hope it helps to better understand what we are trying to do.

J V

Fabio PinnaΒ Ok, but I still don't see the point of structuring it in that way. So imagine you can create 190 topics. They still show at the top of your space/blog. So now your user lands in the space and needs to scroll down a half hour to get to the actual first post. Do I still need coffee?

Fabio Pinna

J VΒ No you don't need coffee, I see your POV and I understand it could be confusing. But since the community doesn't allow tags to better search a specific post, then there are no ways to index properly the posts.
Current search tab doesn't work properly, because for example if you search "ear" through hundreds of posts, it finds you gear, year, dear, bear etc. You know what I mean?

J V

Fabio PinnaΒ I sure do. We are due for an update, so who knows what we can do next week. I would in your case choose for what I said before (still a lot of spaces) and use topics for specifics. To stay with your example China something like Silk route and Great wall, which would be more useful for a user. If we can have some tags and better search option, we can get a long way.

Fabio Pinna

Shahjahan JewelΒ maybe fixing the search rule could be the solution. So it finds the exact word the user is searching for.

Gabri Sala

Fabio PinnaΒ it could help having tags for spaces, (as we have for courses) and topics.

Fabio Pinna

Gabri SalaΒ yes, I definitely agree

J V

Fabio PinnaΒ We have tags for spaces like we have for courses. I tried to tell you before, however you said it was not the same. β˜•
I know you probably like to have #tags, but words can be confusing. ;)

Fabio Pinna

J VΒ I agree with Gabri SalaΒ only about tags for topics. I'm not really interested in tags for spaces since I don't want to clog the community with too many spaces and let users jump from one to another. Since it's used like a blog, they need to stay only in one space.

Thomas Oates

As Gabri SalaΒ posted initially, wouldn't changing the limit in topics settings do the trick? I just changed mine to 30 and was able to add 25 topics to a space with no problems.

Fabio Pinna

Thomas OatesΒ The limits is 40 actually. So you can't go any beyond.

J V

Thomas OatesΒ Ok so I missed the max 40 thing, however please tell me if you would consider 190.

Thomas Oates

J VΒ I wouldn't consider 190 but what I would consider is irrelevant to the needs of the original poster. Unfortunately for him/her, there isn't any filter or way to increase beyond 40 aside from manually editing the database entry. However, this would get overwritten when/if the topics settings are saved again since 40 is the max it will show (and not sure if even changing it to more than 40 in the database would even work anyway).

Fabio Pinna

Thomas OatesΒ Exactly. This would be easily achieved by the post tags, or, at least, a properly set search criteria in searchbar, if tags are not feasable.

Sean

The way I was able to get around it was to create the topics inside the group until I completed my list. I was able to get 21, but that is what I needed. I noticed when I went to make adjustments, if you remove one, you will not be able to add it back beyond 20.

So try creating the topic until you reach your desired number and save, just know you have one shot at this, unless they patched it already.
