Show only username

It would be useful if we could only display usernames or just first names in communities were privacy is important!

William Beem

Perhaps it should be an option. I'm not a fan of pseudonyms for my community sites.

William BeemΒ Options are great! I'm OK with nicknames showing in the community/front-end profile for privacy reasons. In fact, we'd love if this was available. In that instance from the admin/back-side, the email address must match our customer records. And I'd prefer the full name to be real also - but only if the full name can also be hidden from the community.

Charlotte DΒ I think it's understandable. Not every community needs exactly the same thing. I allow my community members to choose their username and change it as they want (if it's available).

One of my communities is for photographers. I think that sort of community prefers to know who you are, even if they have a username other than their real name.

I'm not sure that the privacy issue creates better communities, though. Look at Reddit.

Charlotte

William BeemΒ Absolutely different needs for different communities! No doubt. IMO and experience: business site = real names only; divorce community = nicknames allowed & heavily used; life & estate planning = nicknames allowed but less commonly opted for by the community. But these are just my thoughts for my own communities. I completely respect other thoughts as to setup.

Regardless, I do believe that at least the real email and preferably also the real name must always be visible to the admins/mods. I'm not at all advocating for anonymity from the community owners. That's off the table for me.

Reddit is a whole hot mess of its own for all sorts of reasons.

Charlotte DΒ Yes this is exactly what I'd like! I tutor 16-18 year old students, so it would be useful for safety purposes if admins and moderators were the only ones who could see full names and emails

I allow the people to change their username and name so if they do not want anyone to know who they are so they can obfuscate their identity.

But with that said, I really, really, really hope they reconsider letting people post anonymously. It's a big limitation for the majority of my clients (and myself) as they are all in health and well-being and not everyone wants to disclose certain things publicly (even though it is a "private" space). Getting community feedback is very important and often times the only way people find information. It still leads people having to search on Reddit, etc. instead of being able to get help from the community leaders (which is kind of the point of having a community).

The only option is form -> automation that can post to community. But then we have to build in login/access to the form, check which spaces they have access to, populate the select with those options, set up the integrations, then the automations. When all the team has to do is create a simple checkbox and assign a system derived anonymous user when the checkbox is selected.

Anonymous posting could easily be an option that could be toggled on/off in the space settings.

I also don't use Gravatar for privacy reasons.

Charlotte

Wendy ShoefΒ Definitely no Gravatar! Not on any site of mine.

Charlotte DΒ Do you know how the WordPress profile section works? Are the WordPress user profiles on my server or is it the WordPress.org server? Does this item affect user privacy?

David Scurlock

Wendy ShoefΒ maybe an option to use real name or username and the member can change their username, if available. I dont think this is too much to ask for.

Gee Adriaansz

Wendy ShoefΒ I did as well in the past. But then I noticed that not the profile e-mail or username was changed, but a new one was created. I started to notice this when users complained that they could not access their content (courses and groups) anymore. I mentioned this to the team and then switched this option off again.

David ScurlockΒ my issues would be solved if people could post anonymously honestly. It's the only reason we allow them to make the changes and separate out the information. We have some people with two profiles now... one where they post who they are. The other where they post things that they don't want them to know. I've got to find an easy way around this.

Wendy ShoefΒ have you tried asking Ross FCAΒ and see if he would be willing to create such an addon? Fluentcommunityaddons.com
