Quoting feature
EDIT: Mat showed me how to do quotes here, and thinking about my users—who often struggle even with simple technologies—I think a formatting toolbar could be really useful. This way, even the newbies could use all the commands without any issues.
P.S.: I wasn't able to mention Mat; if I use the @, it’s treated as just a regular character and nothing more.
I’d like to propose a feature that I find extremely useful—I'd even say essential: in old forums, there was always the "quote" function, where you could select text, copy it, quote it, and then reply underneath, making it clear which part of the text you were responding to.
With social media, this feature has largely disappeared, but I personally find it very useful, and so do many of my users :)
In the screenshot, you can see that Invision Power even automates this process—when you select part of a message, it automatically suggests quoting it, and then scrolls down to the comment form.

I’m not suggesting something that advanced (I have no idea how complex that would be), but even a basic quote function would be fantastic!
Mat just explained something important to me:
just a cool hint - if you want to quote a text use slash Commander
In a new line in post Press/ sign on your keyboard / then select Quote from the bubble/list - it is a rally nice feature - sharing hint just in case. Cheers
And to think that I had done a search before opening the new topic! 😂
Thank you, Mat.
Oh yes ! That feature is strongly needed ! Thanks Linda
Pierre Debraux, as you noticed the mentioned person is different Linda then you replied too because of the issue described here - really confusing and not too many users can notice it
Mat, Actually, I thought that Poulson was an automatically generated surname by the platform, and I couldn’t understand why... Now it makes more sense.
Linda Poulsen_1, btw: my current WP username here is: wordpress so when you type @ and that name you can mention me. Mat it is just a Display Name (I have provided my first Name in my User Profile only).
I wish we could have filed: BrandName/NickName and use this in the mention not the WP - but it might be a challenge from the technical point of view. There was a small talk before about the security concerns in this matter but without no output.
BTW: when using web browser you can make a screenshot in windows and paste it directly in the post content
Note: the browser cannot have some privacy settings limited to the clipboard in order this to works
Mat, yes, I know :) but in this case it didn't work, I don't know why (because usually it works).
I belive there is a clipboard memory limit that is why not all screenshot can be pasted in directly - I saw someone here reported this too. Unfortunately the searchbox doesn't allow to search in comments so I am unable to find it haha
Ps. I need to remove your username/mention because the other Linda would be upset hahaha
Thinking about it, a formatting toolbar would be very useful, as many users struggle with this (my users often have some difficulty with technology, even when it’s very simple).
I posted a comment here about the I icon so users can even read about some possibilities - related link from the starter guide here
You are able to format the text:
- Bold, italic, strike-through
- Text size: Header, title, subtitle and text
Activate H1 format (header): "#", then "blank line"
Activate H2 format (title): "##", then "blank line"
Activate H3 format (subtitle): "###", then "blank line"
Display text in italics: "*Example*"
Display text in bold: "**Example**"
Display text in strikethrough: "~~example~~"
Display text in code: "`Example`"
Insert hyphen: "---"
- Numbered and unnumbered enumeration
Hyphen + Space: Start an unnumbered enumeration
1. + Space: Start a numbered enumeration
# + Space: Set a title
- Section separator
-- + Space: A section separator line is inserted
- Emojis
WinKey + i
- Line and paragraph breaks
Linda... it's really awesome that when new testers or experienced users join the community so they can see obvious things and can report it as Feature Request without any hesitation. Great job!
BTW: there is a floating (bubble) formatting menu when we highlight a text (could be visible when a user click a dedicated icon) but it could be maybe improved a bit so we can see more formatting options unless this is a build-in feature and cannot be changed easily.
Mat, the formatting options near the gif button would be perfect, imho :)
Linda Poulsen_1, also we need the Insert icon for entering custom short code so we (admin) could attached mini fForm or mini fBookings (event or booking calendar, call me button), fBoard public StageCard etc under the post (similar place where we see the survey) YEY... a killer features
Adding related request so the Team can follow.
Ability for Admin/Manager to submit a shortcode (Pro) into the post/comment etc so the user could see a mini fForm/fBooking callendar/etc inside that post/PM chat - and user could fill and submit data directly from post.
Admin/Manager could also configure what shortcodes can be inserted in advance so it could be selected from drop-down list once the admin click icon: Insert...
Also
Add to the post/comment kebab icon option (visible for Admin/Manager) called: Add to Tasks - in case fBoard integration is configured.
Mat, absolutely yes!
I would say the quote option Matt presented is not really what we should want. It should be able to quote someone with the push of a button. Including a link to the original post and the poster.
Wilco W, yes true, but the formatting icoun could be there to trigger the bubble formatting popup.
BTW: also linking to other posts is not so convenient now bit there should be a way of linking to other posts and related link icon (max 5 related links to the post) should be displayed under the original post so users can easily navigate. I am pretty sure we can come up with some cool ideas for that.
Shahjahan Jewel curious, is this something on the roadmap? It really makes live easier in longer discussions.
