Question regarding AI API integration and third-party tools in F.C
Dear Team,
Over four months ago, I shared here the idea that “I would like to use a chatbot capable of responding to learners.”
Today, September 8, 2025, Google has further enhanced its learning tool, NotebookLM.
This AI learning platform, already remarkably comprehensive, can now generate quizzes and flashcards from a given source. Moreover, when a learner requests clarification, the AI provides detailed explanations directly based on the source content.
Given these advancements, I would like to reopen the discussion. AI is now an essential part of education and offers almost limitless possibilities in teaching and learning.
I have two questions:
- Is the integration of AI via API planned in the short term? This would represent a MAJOR feature for F.C and would undoubtedly delight many existing and future clients.
- Alternatively, will you allow the use of external tools (for example, Meow’s AI Engine) that could interact directly with F.C?

Last time I checked, Notebook did not have API integration. But you can train your own with nice results 😄.
That being said. Something like that, like the OPEN AI integration of forms but for connecting our agents to a AI chat … would be superb!

The idea is not to replicate or merge NotebookLM, but simply to make it possible to connect an AI with F.C. Once available, it could then be configured to serve as a virtual assistant whenever a learner requires support.
This is very straightforward to implement on WordPress, but currently not feasible with Fluent Community.
I just started the Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate course on Coursera.org, and this has set a new standard for a learning platform, afaik. I'm not familiar with Notebook LM (sounds like I need to get familiar, like right now). In this course, I am being prompted little popup check your understanding test questions during the video, quizzed every couple of videos, and tested at the end of each module, but that's not the crazy part. One of the quiz formats is conversational with an ai agent. It asks me to explain a topic, keeps asking until it gets the answer it is looking for, etc. Learning is changing quickly, for the better, imho! One of the best things ai is capable of in September 2025 is tailored teaching to the individual's needs and understanding. It would be good for this to be used in elementary k-12 education too.
From your comments, I understand what NotebookLLM is doing but how do you see that interacting with Fluent Community? I'm in many Circle groups, and honestly, I hate the AI they've implemented there. I don't come to a private community just to interact with more AI - I want to chat with people. And in that vein I find the AI 'conversation summaries' to be really anti-community. 🪙🪙
Charlotte D that's a fair observation, and calls out another aspect of what I was thinking with my last response. Fluent community is a community plugin with what seems to be an afterthought courses plugin on the side. It seems like people are wanting it to be a full blown learning platform, which is also fair, I guess, but kind of seems like separate products in a way. I believe the op was asking about ai for the courses part, not the community part, at least that was how I interpreted it.

Charlotte, AI should be seen as an assistant available 24/7. The goal is not to replace humans, but to support users in their understanding.
D@vid That's certainly a global statement that's hard to argue on its face.
However, when I see AI inside any tool, my very first thought is privacy and AI training - because unless you're directly in control of the API connection you don't know whether the platform has turned on API data sharing (amongst other things). And with the incentives being offered (API credits), I assume that sharing in enabled.
And when those considerations are combined with sensitive communities and/or IP protection: I don't automatically assume that I want AI inside every tool that I (or customers) touch.
AI Engine plugin from the wp repository allows for ChatGPT or Claude running on trained data from your WP site.
I've been using it for the last couple of months in my community. The big issue with The fluent community plugin is that it's data is not available without custom dev. All the other WP data is, but the fluent community/courses aren't.
I have asked Shahjahan Jewel about this in some other threads and the reply was that the Fluent team are waiting for the next release of WordPress and will use the native WP connector.

If you’re referring to the version of WP with integrated AI, it’s scheduled for release sometime in 2026, with a first version likely in January.
But that’s still a long way off and it probably won’t solve the issue of interaction with F.C.

James Maduk Using WP but missing out on WP’s advantages is really unfortunate. Especially since WP has signed with Perplexity, it’s not certain that the AI solution will be compatible with OpenAI and others.
