Open vs. Closed Communities – A Strategic Question for Fluent Community Users

I’ve been reflecting on a key decision we made at En Busca del Fuego: keeping all our communities private and closed.
It’s a choice driven by intent—control, curation, and coherence. With a clearly defined group, we’ve seen higher trust, less need for moderation, minimal spam, and—perhaps most importantly—a shared language among members. The quality of interactions tends to rise when everyone has passed through a filter of alignment.
Yet, as I explore this very community here (open, vibrant, and delightfully unpredictable), I see another kind of value emerge. Diversity. Serendipity. Network effects. Interactions come faster, ideas come from further away, and the sheer momentum can generate a kind of gravity that pulls everyone forward.

Jorge de los Reyes hi! In my opinion, the choice between open and closed community should be based primarily on the goal: you want to scale your reach and ideas - then open is more important. If the priority is quality of interaction, trust and synchronization - a closed community will be more effective. Open communities provide a network effect and unexpected insights, while closed communities provide depth and manageability. It all depends on the intention.

agree with Artur, your goal should be the baseline for your determination. both have their pros and cons.
I think it should be closed. It adds a sense of belonging to something special versus open to anyone. It's a great way to build a Tribe. The only challenge is when Communities are closed in Fluent Community, you loose all of your SEO. The best way for people to find your website is from all the interactions users are having on your website. how many times have you Googled something and one of the top results is Reddit.
Fluent Community needs a Preview mode, so users can see the conversations and course outlines, but they need to pay to join in on the conversation or see the course details inside the sections.

Sean can you do SEO on the contact page or landing page???
Courses: Having to manually update every time you update your course list, would be a massive hassle.
Spaces: No. You can never replace the SEO benefits of hundreds of posts by your members.
