Migrate from Circle (or at least a CSV)

We have our 2,000+ member (and also 2,300+ posts!) Circle community that I'm migrating to Fluent.

I'm already preparing for the Worst Case Scenario where we either just don't migrate posts, do it manually (yes, copy + paste), or figure out some crazy SQL/PHP MyAdmin export + import task (ugh).

I see BuddyPress (and BuddyBoss) migrations are now available. I'm pretty sure those are WordPress tools. Circle is not a WP plugin, of course.

They did give us a collection of CSV files that are nicely organized (post title, post user, post body, etc.), so at least have that.

I think the member import will be easier: CSV to WordPress users, right?

Any thoughts on importing POSTS into Fluent Community?

Just a curiosity question... what is your reason for leaving Circle to come to FluentCommunity? is it mainly pricing or other things too?

Sam Jansen

Morgan McArthurΒ More customization options I would say. Can be integrated with custom code, hooks, filters etc. But Circle has more out of the box features currently

Morgan McArthur

Sam JansenΒ Thanks for your response. Glad to see how others like yourself are finding more value in FluentCommunity than Circle.

As for your question importing POSTS to FluentCommunity, if you have'nt already definitely reach out to their support with a ticket, I have found them very efficient and useful with their ticketing support.

Oh and a follow up question with Circle vs Fluent Community...

Even with not having full existing wordpress functionality with FluentCommunity due to the way the plugin has been designed (kinda feels like a SAAS product in a way as have have to wait for the Ninja's to make changes), you still finding a lot more flexibility still to Circle?

Sam Jansen

Morgan McArthurΒ It is not really a SAAS product I think because it already can be integrated with wordpress. You can inject custom code and use hooks/filters. I was also able to display the header and sidebar on a custom page. So yeah I think is more flexible than Circle. Because those platforms have limited customazation options.

Morgan McArthurΒ It's mostly a pricing decision. We were (are?) something of a non-profit (well, let's just say we don't make profit ... ;-)) so the Circle fees were killing us. Mostly the "nickel and diming" was getting really old, "Oh, need another admin/moderator/space, sure! That's $10 more per month."

Thanks for the tip about creating a ticket for the migration, will do!

Morgan McArthur

Erin WrightΒ Totally understand on the pricing element with these SAAS companies. Price creep is what they specialise in.

What sort of non-profit were/are you?

Hope you came right with with the ninja support!

Erin Wright

Morgan McArthurΒ we are an organization that helps authors.

No, the ninja team basically said that they don’t have any plug-in or CSV to do this at the moment and recommended copying and pasting. Ouch.
