Access Approval

Invitation link to space is cool.

However, for a closed community, how do you prevent people signing up from frontpage/login/registration page and become user and hence access the portal ?

If you use user role (say member) to prevent automatic access to portal, what is the simplest way to sort out registered users with multiple approvers to grant them users?
