XCloud - storage issues
Hi everyone,
I wanted to share my recent experience migrating to an X Cloud VPS, and see if anyone here (or the Fluent/X Cloud team) can shed some light or provide feedback.
A few days ago, I moved my main website to an 80 GB VPS. I faced several issues during the migration process β the migration plugin didnβt work as expected, and it took four or five manual attempts (with the help of support) to finally get the site up and running.
After the initial VPS setup, the system was already using around 15 GB out of the 80 GB available. Following the multiple migration attempts of just one website, usage jumped to 24 GB. Once all temporary sites (created during the process) were deleted and I was left with only one active site, I noticed that disk usage had increased to 40 GB.
This struck me as very unusual, especially since the actual website folder weighs about 5 GB.
Support kindly ran a cleanup of temporary and residual files, and this helped reduce usage to 31 GB. However, even that still feels excessive for a single site.
Has anyone experienced something similar? Any ideas on what might be causing such high disk usage? Iβd love to hear from others using X Cloud or the team here if you have insights.
Thanks in advance!
β Jorge
Most of my migrations worked without a hitch. I had one client site that gave me a lot of problems with migration. The issues were with the client site and large disk usage was the factor.
This was a very old WooCommerce site that I wanted to clone for testing. I had to clean up the database, use log rotate on some log files that were 6 GB in size, and a few more things.
Sadly, I can't remember what exactly I hit on that resolved the issue and it transferred just fine. It was definitely space and DB related. Good luck.
William BeemΒ Oh, I see.
This site is only 5 GB.
Itβs a simple one: blog, surecart and fluent suite.
Nothing fancy I guess.
Hopefully support can give me more info, because I am not that tech-savvy to conduct a research on what could be the problem.
In my kind of a site is 5GB, it should take 5GB la storage π
I tried xCloud a few months back and cancelled my subscription for similar reasons. I could barely host 1 site and could tell that adding more sites would cause issues. I also noticed some off artifacting of code in my wordpress dashboard that I didn't see when I'd hosted the same site on other services. I've been reluctant to take advantage of the LTD for this reason
A SMITHΒ thank you for the feedback.
I hope not to have more issues like this.
Itβs been working fine since.
The problem is basically. The strange storage consumption.
I am reluctant to include more sites due to this not being resolved yet, and of course, itβs costing us time waiting for support.
Itβs been a couple of days nowβ¦ since last week. So, hopefully they find what is the problem.
Thank you for letting me know this hint that this storage consumption itβs not normal.
I do not have experience managing VPS, so, I was confused if this was something normal or not.
I helped a friend migrate two sites (one tiny, one a few GB of data) and he was having trouble with the backups because the server install used almost all of the available space. Since they were low traffic sites, he was on the smallest plan with xCloud, but he wound up just upgrading it to the next size up (so probably newcomer at 25GB to lite or basic at 32 or 55GB?)
Blaine MooreΒ Thanks for sharing that, Blaine β thatβs super helpful.
It sounds like your friend went through something very similar. In my case, I also started with just one site (about 5 GB in size), and even after cleanup, Iβm still seeing usage around 31 GB on an 80 GB plan. So Iβm not even on one of the smaller tiers β and yet more than a third of the disk is being used by just one active site.
Thatβs why I was a bit surprised. Itβs not a dealbreaker, but Iβm definitely curious to understand whatβs taking up so much space β especially after all temp files were supposedly removed.
Thanks again for the input! Itβs good to know others are seeing similar patterns.
Jorge de los ReyesΒ - My two servers:
- 38/130 GB, 23 sites (OLS)
- 30/264 GB, 13 sites (NGINX)
Both are created directly through Vultr, not through xCloud, xCloud just manages them.
So I assume that the base install just uses a large amount, then it's fairly normal going forward.
Blaine MooreΒ Thanks again, Blaine β really appreciate you taking the time.
I actually went with XCloud Provider (the Vultr HF plans they manage), mainly because thereβs a special deal for LTD users and they use Vultr anyway. So I figured it made sense.
That said, do you know if thereβs any real operational or management difference between spinning up a server directly via Vultr versus going through XCloud Provider? Iβm guessing itβs mostly the control panel/support layer on top, but would love to hear your take if youβve noticed anything.
Regarding the storage, yeah β 15β20 GB might be a normal base, but after seeing it go up to 30 GB for just one site (post-migration and cleanup), Iβm still a bit puzzled. Letβs see what support comes back with β maybe thereβs something else lingering that wasnβt cleared.
Thanks again for the insight!
Jorge de los ReyesΒ - Actually, that's a good question, I was in on the initial round of lifetime deals when they first launched and don't think that there was an option for xCloud for the LTD then (or if so, I missed it) - it probably would be a little cheaper...I'll have to investigate that and compare the costs, haha!
Might be a good time to switch and move things over alter this Summer when I'm ready to go live with my new website when migrating things over as an easier way to update the domain names and put the current site onto an archived subdomain for reference only and the development site into production.
I assume that there's little difference between xCloud-provided or direct-to-Vultr as presumably they are just using the same API calls, and just using their API key instead of ours. So just the price difference?
Jorge de los ReyesΒ When you bring over a server from another host, you typically manage it yourself. My SA days are long behind me, so I'll pay a few dollars more per month to have someone else manage them.
Blaine MooreΒ Yeah, that makes sense - I think the LTD through xCloud Provider came a bit later, so it wasnβt part of the first wave of deals. I totally get it, it might actually end up being a bit cheaper now compared to going directly through Vultr, especially with the xCloud management layer included.
Your plan to switch after summer sounds very reasonable - having the new site ready and doing the migration with domain changes already planned is definitely cleaner.
And yes, I had the same thought: I assume xCloud is just wrapping the same Vultr API with their own key and management interface, so the core infrastructure should be identical. If thatβs the case, then yeah - support and pricing are probably the main differences.
Let me know if you do compare the costs later - would be great to hear what you find!
And again, thank you for your insights!
Very valuable!
Jorge de los ReyesΒ - Looks like I'd pay $6.40 and $4.80 less per month to replace my two servers if I migrated to xCloud on the LTD deal, assuming the pricing is reflecting the LTD deal. So, thanks for bringing that to my attention!
One other advantage of using Vultr was I did create a new account and got the free credits for using their affiliate link when I was first migrating off of Cloudways for the one server, so that helped at the time.
William BeemΒ - Yeah, I managed the servers myself directly for a client but once I bought his business from him 3-ish years ago, I moved to Cloudways so I wouldn't have to do the administration stuff manually. (xCloud is way better than Cloudways...even without the LTD, it's cheaper, and the tech stack they use is cheaper, and regular improvements are great.) I'm still self-managing two servers myself, but that's mostly for testing or for apps that I want to run that xCloud doesn't currently support. (Plus, one of the servers is in my basement and is used as a local NAS and to handle all of our backups.)
William Beem Totally fair, William -I completely get that. I'm not a sysadmin either, so going with the managed option through xCloud felt like the safest route.
We also prioritize GDPR-friendly environments, so having and managing servers within Europe is a must for us. Moreover if there is a tech team behind.
Having their team available for migrations, updates, and general maintenance gave me real peace of mind - especially since I just moved from shared hosting.
Iβd much rather focus on running my business than dealing with server-level issues, so paying a bit more for proper management definitely feels worth it.
The only issue I encountered so far here, was the multiple attempts of unfructuous migrations (like 5 or 6) that make the xCloud team had to migrate for us + the storage behaviour.
I guess 20-25 /80 would be the normal. For the community comments.
But also guess, that because we have 30/80GB. There could probably something occupying around 10GB here. Even the tmp was cleaned.
So... I will post an update once I have the support answer to their further researchs.
Blaine Moore Thatβs super helpful to know β glad it was useful!
I also considered the Vultr affiliate route (they offer credits with different providers), but in my case, since I was starting from scratch and wanted a fully managed solution β ideally Europe-based for GDPR compliance (even though that could technically work with any provider) β the xCloud LTD felt like the best fit overall.
Totally agree: the tech stack, support responsiveness, and pricing make xCloud a solid alternative to Cloudways. And it makes sense that youβre still managing some servers for testing or specific apps - I might explore something similar down the line once I feel more confident with the infrastructure side.
Of course, I still need to resolve the storage situation with support (still pending β maybe just a 10GB cleanup?). From what Iβve seen in the comments, it feels like 20/80GB should be normal in my case, but 30GB still seems a bit off for a single site that is just 5GB.
Once thatβs sorted, Iβm looking forward to testing their one-click apps. N8N looks really promising, and theyβre about to add Mautic too, something I wanted to test for pipelines and so - in fact, the beta is already available if you ask.
For now, Iβm happy not having to deal with backups or updates manually π
Thanks again for sharing your numbers -super helpful!
Jorge de los ReyesΒ - N8N was one of the original reasons I setup my testing server, haha! I had tested it on my local server a while ago, but I didn't want it open to the internet so only had limited recipes I could run on it. Then N8N was announced at xCloud right after I'd setup the server with DokPloy and started putting a few things on it.
That server is a Black Friday RackNerd deal, so something like $50/year for what's actually pretty good specs, but I don't want to put anything mission critical on it since I don't know how well it'll work for that price and the type of support I'd be able to get if I ever needed it.
But, perfect for testing things out or running non-mission-critical apps. Just did a search and looks like they have even better "Black Friday" deals now than the one I'd gotten from a few years back.
I'm hoping xCloud puts a docker-style installation option in at some point; then I'd just replace that test server (again) and let xCloud manage and still use for the same apps.
I set up a new server just now and its saying:
Disk Usage:16.01 GBof161.52 GBused
There is nothing on it yet. This cant be the OS surely?
Luke HubCoΒ exactly. I thought the same. And in fact, itβs the settings of the server.
Like when you purchase a SD or a new phone π
Jorge de los ReyesΒ yep the support said its norm.. Feels a little excessive.
Luke HubCoΒ same opinion here!
I guess that just, announcing it on the hiring page, would make the difference.
Itβs unclear how itβs advertised.
After just one site, we get 40 of 80 π
In the end it was clear that the site is 15GB.
15 of settings + 15 of site: 30
+10GB of temp filesβ¦
- Yep. Something to be aware and something to learn about how VPS works.
This has been my first experience with XCloud and VPS. But apparently this is something completely normal
So far I have 10 sites migrated with only one issue with the database not being migrated with it. I made a second attempt with no issues.
They are going to migrate one for me thatβs a codecanyon php site in next few hours.
Overall my experience is good and I plan to stay for a while. I went with their vultr hosting (even though I already have an account with vultr) and am very pleased.
We Need a
Fluent-Xcloud
community board...
