Show VAT inclusive price for specific countries

Based in Switzerland, my store needs to show VAT-inclusive prices. I want the opposite for the EU and other countries (price + tax). Is there a way to implement that? Any Swiss-based businesses here? Thanks!

FluentCart does not currently has a native country-based setting for switching between VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive price display.

At the moment, tax inclusion can be configured globally or per variation, while the actual tax rate can change depending on the customer's country.

You could, however, customize the price suffix depending on the customer's country using FluentCart's fluent_cart/product/price_suffix_atts filter.

For example:

add_filter('fluent_cart/product/price_suffix_atts', function ($suffix, $context) {

    // Try to get the customer's selected/billing country.
    $country = '';

    if (!empty($_POST['billing_country'])) {
        $country = sanitize_text_field(wp_unslash($_POST['billing_country']));
    } elseif (!empty($_COOKIE['fct_customer_country'])) {
        $country = sanitize_text_field(wp_unslash($_COOKIE['fct_customer_country']));
    }

    // Switzerland
    if ($country === 'CH') {
        return 'incl. VAT';
    }

    // Everywhere else
    return '+ VAT';

}, 10, 2);

That's only the display layer, though.

(It would not automatically change a CHF 100 net price into CHF 108.10 gross, or vice versa).

For the behaviour you describe, FluentCart would ideally need something like:

Tax display mode β†’ By customer country

  • Switzerland β†’ Prices displayed VAT inclusive
  • EU / other countries β†’ Prices displayed VAT exclusive

with FluentCart itself converting between the net and gross display price while keeping the underlying tax calculation consistent.

So I think this is a valid feature request rather than something that can currently be fully configured from the UI.

Alternatively, maybe you can just, create products for EU sale only or Switzerland sale only, and set the custom tax inclusive or exclusive per variation. And filter which products are shown per country.

Jorge de los ReyesΒ Thank you. Must say that sounds very complicated as I'd be duplicating all products :) I'm based in CH, so it's anl de facto market. Tax-inclusive I'll be legal and gouged by the 20% VAT countries.

is VAT-inclusive a selling point?

Maude Vuille Thanks, Maude: you’re right. Duplicating the entire catalogue would be cumbersome. I only meant it as a possible workaround.

Are you selling to consumers (B2C), businesses (B2B), or both? For B2B, net prices are often more relevant to buyers. For many cross-border B2B services, reverse charge applies, meaning the business customer accounts for VAT rather than you charging it. That depends on what you sell and the customer’s tax status, though (B2B doesn’t automatically mean no VAT).

For B2C, I’d see VAT-inclusive pricing mainly as a matter of clarity: customers can see the total they’ll pay. Whether that helps sales would depend on your audience.

Displaying VAT-inclusive prices and keeping the same final price in every country are separate decisions. A higher VAT rate reduces your net revenue if you keep the final price fixed. If you keep the net price fixed instead, the final price varies with the applicable VAT rate. The question is how FluentCart can support the display you need.

Also, to clarify my earlier suggestion: the snippet only changes the wording beside the price. It doesn’t convert the displayed amount.

It would be useful to hear from the FluentCart team whether there’s a supported way to show VAT-inclusive prices for Switzerland and VAT-exclusive prices elsewhere, using the same products and consistent tax calculations.
