Payment Plans for Recurring Subscriptions

For companies selling high ticket subscriptions, there has always been a challenge, having to choose between offering an autorenewing yearly subscription and a non-renewing payment plan.
Say one year access to the product costs $1,000.
Being a large amount, customers could prefer to split the payment.
The problem is that a payment plan, that ends, say, within 3 months ("3 monthly payments"), will not autorenewl at the end of the 12-month access period.

I understand why no eCommerce solution has ever offered this feature (a subscription that is paid over the first x cycles, but grants access to the membership for xyz cycles, and then auto-renews with another payment plans....), but it would be a really useful solution for some businesses.
