xCloud Challenges

xCloud hosting seems promising. We jumped right in, then got stuck trying to migrate one of our sites. Here's what we are noticing so far.

The good so far: Migrating our smaller sites onto the managed hosting was straight forward. Mostly smooth and painless. However, one of our sites took several attempts to get it fully migrated. Took over a day to get the site migrated.

The not so good: If you have a multisite you need to migrate - which we do, there are many bumps you could encounter. The migration of multisites is not quite sorted yet. The bigger issue is the delays to get support to help complete a migration. We are still waiting for support to help us sort out our multsite migration. Could take 9 hours to hear back then silence. That for me would have been a deal breaker if we had not already migrated our other sites.

Overall, I like the interface. I'm hoping we will get over the hump of the multisite and stay with xCloud. We'll see how things go.

I've also had major issues with multisite on xCloud, not related to migration though.

Migration to Xcloud is horrible. All options are half-baked. I hope they will improve it. Migrating via SFTP seems like the right option for large sites.

Same experience.

It took us like 7 to 8 attempts to migrate a site. And, because the migration process did not work, we left that to the team.

And it took a couple of weeks…

That was months ago.

And we are still waiting reply to an inherited β€œproblem” of that migration (that you may want to check too).

That is that, if you used a demo site to test prior to going live, some info related to images (among other data), will probably be redirecting still to the demo site and not to your live site: creating redirection errors, images not showing…

Specially info of the main domain, entered into tables of plugins (like forms, LMS, and so).

So imagine tables and tables … referring to the demo site domain after going live and poping up the β€œweb not found”.

Use case: we had a form redirecting after submission to checkout. And oh, surprise. Conversion was dropping drastically and we found it was due to an error on redirection. Because the form was redirecting to the checkout but with the demo site termination πŸ€ͺ.

I sent a ticket a couple of weeks ago to see if β€œthere was someone at home” after several follow ups.

But I did not get a reply in months…

your post just reminded me. So imagine…

That being said, the service and platform in general is pretty handy. And usually, you can solve most of the problems with support with some kind of celerity. And they are kind and attentive in the chat (if you are able to talk to someone any soon).

But, I guess that, for the hard and tricky issues (the ones that makes the difference). Like the ones you mentioned.

This could be definitely a deal breaker… and a business breaker.

And it’s also the main reason we are reluctant to share it widely.

Because support is the top service a server management company should focus.

Specially when people who use VPS, are, normally, businesses that need fast support and responses.

I guess, again, that’s why many business still prefer to use the most famous platforms.

VPS management with this kind of support is a big headache.

I really hope they can improve the support. because the are quite innovative.

Used all in one migration tool UNlimited option and all migrations were a breeze
