We really need to have some type of email notification when someone requests to join a group. I've asked my community to test our install and just found a bunch of membership requests that I neglected. In real world scenario this would be a problem.

Mike Cameron, We will make it configurable. So site admin can setup the default notification and then user can also change that for his own.

Notifications Manager in the user profile can include multi selections. User should be able to enable/disable notification (separate for email and in app: red indicator) when:
someone commented on your post
someone liked your post
someone replied to your post
someone sent you a Chat/PM
someone mentioned you in a post
someone sent a post in the Space you belong to
someone flagged your post
you were accepted in a Space/Course (if applicable) etc
