Push Notifications are here - FluentCommunity 2.9.0 🔔
The most requested feature in FluentCommunity's history ships today.
A community runs on replies. Someone answers, the asker comes back, a third person joins. Email breaks that loop: it arrives hours late, buried, or not at all. The thread goes cold and the person who answered feels ignored.
Push fixes it where it breaks. A reply lands, their phone buzzes in seconds, tab closed or not, and they are back while the thread is still alive. Every reply becomes a return; every return creates the next reply.
What you get
- Push on desktop and mobile, powered by FluentNotify, our free plugin. Install from FluentCommunity settings, connect once, done.
- No third-party service, no per-subscriber pricing. Your data stays on your site.
- Members pick Email or Push per event: comments on my post, replies to my comment, mentions, and, new in 2.9.0, someone commented on a post I commented on.
- You set the defaults for every member and place the "Never Miss a Reply" prompt in up to four spots.
- One switch to turn push off community-wide if you ever need to.
Also in 2.9.0
- Drag-and-drop ordering for topics and badges
- Fluent Messaging 2.9.0: chat moderation, member search, emoji picker, endless scroll
- Installed app now covers your whole site, pull-to-refresh on iOS
- Full accessibility pass across portal and chat
- Security hardening on every endpoint
- Internal bug board at zero. Everything we know about is fixed and shipped.

Update, turn on push notifications, and watch your threads come back to life. Please share your feedback on these new features in the comments.
I love this update, no more relying on emails... Fluent Community gold.
Please add the push notification plugin to fluenthub for consistency
Bryan William Was going to write this, yes please, fluenthub rules :D
Amazing!! So good to have it all under one roof!
Sweet
Is the knowledge base Fluent Docs?
Jaime Santiago it’s just vitepress and pure markdown files.
Shahjahan Jewel Thank you
perfect
does the Push Notifications works on PWA?
Shahjahan Jewel it is not working for me in this community? do i miss something?
Ramsis Kasis Ditto. Not showing for me either.
Thomas Oates Yeah ..it doesn't work, I ended up removing it
Shahjahan Jewel the push notification is not working on this community why?
Ramsis Kasis Don't know about your case. But which browser are you using? Does your browser have access to the system notification? Maybe it's blocked or not enabled.
Shahjahan Jewel The notification setting inside the PWA wasn't showing for me before. It's showing now, and I've enabled it — seems to be working correctly.
Shahjahan Jewel It's not working on my PWA, just enable on this community and in mine, but nothing. I have Chrome and enable notifications. Thanks for the amazing work! 🙏🏻
This is HUGE!! Thank you!
Awesome - will check it out. Shahjahan Jewel will it be possible to push our own custom notifications through FluentNotify?
FINALLYYYYY
Shahjahan Jewel please provide a development license, so I can integrate push notifications compatibility to better messages plugin. thanks in advance.
Andrij Tkachenko the push notification is completely free. If you need the pro. Version of the community, please open a support ticket, my Team will send a copy.
Please add the push notification plugin to fluenthub for consistency
Another huge feature 👏 well done team! Having been running push on my community for a while now, this is going to be a gamechanger for community engagement for your users. It's also one of these features, much like PWA, that I didn't want to have to develop 😅 this is 100% a core feature and I'm looking forward to a stable engine and a chance to play around with it.
Quick question, it's Firebase only? The post mentions no third-party service (assuming you just meant paid?), but the instructions only cover FCM.
Ross FCA yes. It’s firebase based.
firebase decision looks strange really 😶🌫️ but I will make integration anyway :D
You guyssssssssssssss!
Tobi Salami which browser are you using? I will take a look.
Tobi Salami can you try now? you may have to reset the permission.
Shahjahan Jewel I am using Brave
Tobi Salami Shahjahan Jewel I'm having the same error in my community with the Brave browser
While I've got everything up and running for the push notifications, trying to update the notification settings under my own profile and they are not saving.
Katie Sauer do you see any errors in the developer tools' console?
Marwan Alkhaleel Nothing is popping up there when I go to save the settings. And then I refresh the settings are all back to disabled but again nothing in the console.
I am having the same issue. Cannot update the push notification settings on my profile and because of this it will not allow me to see the FluentNotify settings page.
I have a problem as end-user:

Now I have that. Not sure how to solve this:

Prosper can you try now? I just upgraded to latest version to this community and tested myself.
Shahjahan Jewel now I have the error message which says notifications blocked
Prosper it’s from the browser. Reset the permission and try again please.
Shahjahan Jewel great it seems to work now
Prosper That's awesome.
Shahjahan Jewel I cannot find the push notifications options. Only previous email options here https://community.wpmanageninja.com/portal/u/prosper256/notification-settings
Prosper Should show like this. Please make sure you do a hard reload.

Shahjahan Jewel my url is correct?
ok great it appeared now
A much needed upgrade for sure but PWA is still unusable from my part so I assume that push notifications won’t work well either. I’ll update tonight but the last update didn’t deliver
AS W what problem are you facing with PWA?
It's all set up .... everything was OK....still doesn't work. Not getting any notices when folks post ....just emails as usual. So, can't say much about it....I just removed it, it doesn't work sadly.
all I get. I will come back to mess with it later. Shahjahan Jewel
Jeff Brigman find in WP admin FluentNotify and configure Firebase.
Drive Zone thank you, I had to much going on yesterday to really mess with it.
Awesome!! Thanks a lot.
That’s an awesome feature, and I can see a lot of potential with push campaigns.
Just to confirm, if I run multiple communities, do I need to create a separate Firebase app for each one?
I could kiss your face literally this is amazing!!!
Super! Congrats to the team — this is something we’ve all been waiting for for a long time. Push notifications are a really useful and important addition for community engagement.
Looking forward to future updates, and I’d really appreciate it if you could also add an option to notify members when any user, including admins, publishes a new post in the community, with the ability for each member to turn these notifications on or off.
When I click the settings button in fluent notify I get this error message
"Push notifications are not active
Enable push notifications and complete the Firebase configuration in FluentNotify settings to continue."
Am I missing a step somewhere?
So basically, you have to go to /wp-admin -> FluentNotify and then configure the firebase. We have released 2.9.1 which we have added the progress bar and settings URL.
It worked, and I think the latest update to the push plugin may have broken it.
Update: push works fine. This test is still throwing this error.

Ooooh exciting! I'll give it a spin. 😍
Shahjahan Jewel for privacy concerns, will you be offering any alternatives to Firebase? Part of the reason why I rolled my own solution.
David Churchill So for the push notification, we are not sending any personal data to Firebase. Now, if your users use Chrome, you must have to send the data to Google, for safar to apple's server. So there has not self hosted solution. Firebase is just the bearer here which is super cheap / free and can route to apple, mozilla, google based on browser. So if you think about the own solution, there has none and can't be done. As Apple / Google own the browser and their servie endpoints.
Shahjahan Jewel thanks for the quick reply. I've been through the FluentNotify docs and I'm not sure the "no personal data" bit is right — am I misreading it?
The VAPID key comes from Firebase's own Web Push certificates, so Google has the private key, and we upload an Admin SDK service account for sending. Doesn't that mean messages go to FCM in plaintext and Google does the encryption at their end? If so it'd be seeing "Dave replied to your comment" every time.
Happy to be corrected if I've missed a step — but it sounds like I'd need to update my privacy policy on all my sites if I used it?
David Churchill sorry, I missed your point. We started with Firebase because it supports all browsers, free and retries and performance wise better. We could use direct VAPID and route by the browser provider. Maybe we will make the firebase as driver and implement direct connection someday.
Shahjahan Jewel okay, my obvious concern is that UK/EU GDPR, CCPA/CPRA and others will require privacy policies to name Google/Firebase as a third-party processor of notification content.
Also, do you know at what point does the Firebase SDK loads? If it's on page load rather than after opt-in, that's a consent question here as well as a policy one.
Sorry to sound like a pain, but might be worth a note in the docs so people are aware?
David Churchill this is a very valid concern for GDPR. Shahjahan Jewel it would be amazing if you can clarify this in the docs, so we can take best decisions for compliance.
i have installed cleared cache etc on safari and still get an error "Failed to Subscribe" please try again
ok even though the error is produced its showing on pc still checking moile devices
Disregard missing one character on the API Key user error strikes again lmao
Excellent! Thank you for this powerful feature! Fluent keeps getting better & better. 😀
Shahjahan Jewel Is there a way to delete or resend notifications from the "Logs" page? This would be handy.
Thank you so much for this update team!
Shahjahan Jewel I've completed the configuration: The verify credentials says "Success: Firebase accepted these credentials." but "Enable & send test" shows "Error: Registration failed - push service error" (see screenshot attached). I am using Brave browser. Any ideas what the issue may be? I'm using Version 2.9.1.

"No third-party service", strictly not true, Google Firebase is a pain in the ass to set up.
Doug Dennison took me 5 minutes to set it up.
love it!
does it only work with Google Firebase or is there the possibility to set up Fluent Notify with an alternative service (Europe and GDPR...), e.g. Supabase or something else?
Supabase 😍
Dragan STAMENKOVIC ooh, this is nice 👍
Cannot see the "Data retention" section on the Notify settings page.
I don't see the push notification prompts I setup anywhere in my PWA on my phone. they don't show up.
Not working on iPhone 15 so far
"Uploaded videos finally look like videos in card view..." - The video thumbnail now appears in the card view, but the preview has disappeared from the “Timeline” view 😅

Mat Kyc noticed same problem with few videos
Mat Kyc same here. I was happy but then that happened... they will find the way 🤞🏻
Tawsif Ahmed Riyad thank you :)
Tawsif Ahmed Riyad thank you!
Push not working on PWA with firefox on android :S and in Firefox for linux, the tests worked but when sending a post, didn't get the notification either :S I've checked and now I don't have notifications history :S

Jorge Nava (SolidCapo) same here. test worked, now nothing.
Not working for me either in Android Firefox :S
Shahjahan Jewel Update: on PC in Firefox I see the prompt. In chrome on PC I don't. Also in chrome PWA no prompt (Android). Samsung Browser on Android phone also shows prompts. Seems to be an issue with chrome.
Update: sorry, it's no chrome issue, it was an issue with my understanding of how the push notifications work. I thought I had to allow them in the community or in the app. But actually I am giving my browser the permission - on desktop and also in the PWA. And I did that before, but didn't really understand what that meant. But now I know. All is working fine. Besides that:
Tried to install the PWA through Samsung Browser. Got a security warning from Google Play Protect.
why does the notification bubble on the app icon and the bell icon in the status bar disappear after 10 seconds?
Birgit same here :S
AMAZING!! 🥳
now the push notifications stopped working in my PWA. After the initial test where they showed up once, now they don't anylonger. That's bad. Any help? 😕
Birgit Maybe browser notification got disabled. Can you please check this and try? https://docs.fluentcommunity.co/enabling-and-disabling-push-notifications
