Portal was down for 17 hours!
Last night, our portal went down and we just got it back.
What happened?
Most of our sites are hosted on Amazon AWS but this portal is hosted on Contabo. A few of their host machines went down last night and they never communicated with me. I tried to call them, sent tons of emails, tweeted them and no responses. Finally, it's back now.
It was one of the worst experiences so far and I am going to move this portal to xCloud managed server or AWS later today.
Many of you reached me personally about this downtime and I am truly sorry about this incident. I hope it will never happen again as I am goingt to close my Contabo account.
Lets celebrate!
Shit happens. No worries.
Welcome back β€οΈ
S**t happens to everyone, including pros like you. I'm happy the storm is over.
We are on the new server now. I think we missed a few posts and comments. Sorry guys!
Shahjahan Jewel, no worries about a few missing posts and comments. We appreciate all the work youβre putting in to keep things moving forward! π
This brings the question about clustering data for fail safe. Is there anything out there for that? Maybe...>I am the only one with that question. :)
It would be great if you had a tutorial on how to choose a stable and well-supported hosting as well as notes on hosting when using FluentCommunity. This is useful for newbies to avoid many unnecessary mistakes, helping them to develop the community faster π
This happens to some of us (if not us all). So, no worries.
Good opportunity to cross-promote X-Cloud!
John Coonen, not actually! We were using xCloud. We are still using it as a management panel.
Shahjahan Jewel, Cool. xCloud ftw.
π I'm glad you guys are back!
Good to know the error was real. I thought the Cloudflare error message was just me. Glad you got it sorted. Shahjahan Jewel However this makes me start thinking about how server intensive is Fluent Community? Is that what brought down Contabo's machines?
Gregory Storm, it was an issue with their end. And looks like a big node got down and most probably 100s of VPS got down as well.
Regarding this plugin server requirements: We build this plugin to make it as fast as possible. We have devoted 100s of hours to optimizing every bit of it. We spent hours making each database query optimized. FluentCommunity is the most performant plugin in this category (guaranteed and it's an open challenge).
Well, I am on AWS and one of my servers went down yesterday. I quickly spun up a new one and moved stuff over, and my issue was fixed in an hour, on my own.
I think the determining factor for leaving a VPS company should not be whether or not they have a 100% uptime. No one does. I think it should be how responsive they are to the issue of downtime when it does happen.
I never used Contabo.
Tobi Salami, the problem was with the communication. They first responded after 14 hours of downtime and it was not about a specific VPS and it was their full node issue in their data center.
I signed up with Contabo years back and their support was top-notch at the beginning, really quick and helpful. But over the past two years, I've switched all my services away from them. I wouldn't recommend Contabo anymore.
We are in Hetzner environment = ZERO offtime and communication around the clock is the important thing. It works. Downtime could happen but no reactions is the worst would can happen. It's a no go.
Grateful this happened prior to launch
